Japan 2018

Japan 2018

Period: 5.5. – 19.5.2018

Martina had an opportunity to participate in the scientific conference in Nara and we immediately decided to visit Japan again… Martina has never been to Kyushu before. So, we agreed with Fumi to spend one week together while exploring active volcanos on the island. And we still had time to visit Himeji and Kyoto on the way to the conference venue.

Highlights of the trip:
  • Dazaifu – Tenman-gū Shinto shrine
  • Unzen – experiencing the power of volcanos (buried houses & hot springs)
  • Mount Aso – hiking in one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world
  • Takachiho Gorge – sheer cliffs, waterfalls & newts
  • Kirishima NP – hiking in the volcanic landscape
  • Sakurajima – closer look at the active volcano
  • Himeji – visiting one of the best castle complexes in Japan
  • Kyoto – wondering among the ancient temples & shrines
  • Nara – Tōdai-ji temple – the largest wooden building in the world
  • Fushimi – Inari Taisha with famous shrine gates forming a tunnel
